Since your external monitor show as the only monitor when you close the lid, I believe there is a setting that you missed which will turn off the laptop monitor when you close the lid, have you check the settings in your BIOS? (maybe it's under Power Management or Advanced Settings). Whenever I close the laptop lid after powering up the computer the monitor goes dark. I sometimes use an external monitor with my laptop.
